Brick Lane

Family portrayal is a key aspect within the film industry. If there is going to be a movie aimed at a family audience, it has to be clear and consists to avoid any confliction with that target audience. In the movie brick lane family is seen as a key aspect with in this modern society and especially for traditional eastern families who hold a strong passion for family values. The moment when she is taken away from her family be married to her husband that she didn’t know anything about shows us how much family life is important even if it is rushed or unexpected. The characters are all set out as the audience would imagine which is to have the alpha male dad the easy lead the quite child and the unruly daughter. Naturally these are the type’s characters that we will see within in a western family but some change has taken place so that we can see the effect that the western world has had on this family.
The dad’s ideas of family are very strong in his mind but for many reasons can’t quite get them into reality. He is always bringing home new things and new ideas, for example when he brings home the computer it’s just another way for him to interact and build a decent relationship with his daughters. This idea does not work out and in return tells them they cannot use it. The dad is struggling to maintain the traditional principles of discipline when it comes to respect for older people. At the end of the film the dad says he “I don’t belong here I want to go home”. At this very point we see the dad almost begging to keep the family together by letting them go back home to Bangladesh, where the family will restore back their traditional values. The mothers’ role towards the older daughter is very much friend like the closeness is non traditional for a mother but even she has changed her views slightly. The mothers affair is the prominent reason why the family has broken down, she is aware of how dangerous her action are but she still wants to find her place in western world. When the daughter confronts the dad about letting the mum make her own decision that is the point of climax where all is revelled to the dad and the family at this point begins to break up.

  2. As we have discussed, you must take the tiem to re-read your work and ensure that you have written what you actually meant to say. As we went through in class, your ideas become slightly blurred when you are writing. I would start off writing exactly what you would verbally say, and take it from there.
